Collection: Clan Crest

Clan crests are a symbol of belonging to a clan and allegiance to its chief. They combine the chief’s heraldic crest and motto, as listed in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland.

Although some clan chief’s crests date back as far, or further, than the establishment of the register in 1592, clan followers only began sporting them during the highlandwear revival of the nineteenth century. Prior to that, specific plants would have been worn as a sign of allegiance - tucked in a bonnet or hung from a spear.

You’ll notice the belt and buckle coiled around the crest - the chief alone has the right to bear it without this.

Our clan crest products are all supplied by Art Pewter and feature authentic representations taken from the Arms of the Chiefs of the Clans, approved by the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.

Clan membership goes through surname but if you have no obvious affiliation, don’t despair. Septs are surnames that are historically associated with a particular clan. Some may even be associated with several, in which case you can either enjoy having a choice or choose to get into some serious genealogy. Here is Art Pewter’s Sept List to get you started.
