Blue Buchanan Tartan: Made in Scotland

100% Scottish, from start to finish, Blue Buchanan represents far more than a beautiful colour palette.

Throughout our years of endeavour, Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers has remained committed to traditional craftsmanship and authentic materials. Every garment we make or offer for hire is rooted in heritage and quality, with that philosophy extending right down to the cloth itself. When it comes to tartan, we choose to work with trusted Scottish mills who weave exceptional yarns into genuine tartan cloth, honouring centuries of skill and knowledge in every length.

It may come as a surprise to learn that not all tartans are woven using Scottish wool. Over recent decades, increasing global demand for larger quantities of cloth, higher yields, and softer handling led much of the textiles industry to source yarns from further afield.

Mindful and Considered Choices

Today, however, there is a growing demand for sustainable approaches and materials that truly stand the test of time. As the kiltmaking industry becomes more mindful of it's environmental impact, mills such as Lochcarron are leading a return to British and Scottish wool, investing in the development of these fibres while supporting local farmers and rural communities across Scotland.

This is where Blue Buchanan takes centre stage.

Woven by Lochcarron in their inimitable Strome quality, Blue Buchanan is a 16oz heavyweight tartan is made from 100% Scottish wool and is widely regarded as one of the finest kilting cloths available. Robust yet comfortable, it holds its shape beautifully and wears exceptionally well - qualities that make it perfectly suited to both ceremonial wear and long days of celebration. Don't just take our word for it! Watch Ross King take the Strictly stage in our handmade Blue Buchanan kilt!

What makes wool special?

Wool itself is a remarkable fibre - one that has been keeping us (and sheep!) warm for millennia. Naturally insulating yet highly breathable, it helps regulate body temperature across changing conditions. It is durable, resilient, and forgiving in wear, making it ideal for garments designed to be worn, reused, and treasured. As a renewable resource, wool is biodegradable and far kinder to the environment than many synthetic alternatives, and it can often be recycled into new textiles, extending its life even further.

Visually, Blue Buchanan is a tartan of depth and richness. Deep navy and indigo tones form its foundation, giving the cloth a timeless, grounding presence. Vibrant blue brings energy and lifts through the pattern, while warm rust colour lines add contrast and softness.

Woven from Scottish wool, by Scottish hands, for those who value authenticity, longevity, and confidence in what they wear. Blue Buchanan is a perfect example of how tradition and thoughtful modern practice come together in cloth that truly earns its place in our hire range.
