Hire of the Month - March 2025 - Black Watch Tartan

One of the oldest tartans available, the regimental Black Watch Tartan is a sophisticated hire option with regimental clout.

Black Watch Tartan

Arguably, one of the worlds most well-known fabrics, the famous Black Watch Tartan has its source firmly founded in regimental history.

Checked native wool cloth was commonly worn throughout history by Highland Clans and their independently raised militia. In 1627 it is known that tartan clad body of Highland Archers was raised to serve King Charles 1st.

"The Black Watch was raised in an unique way. In the wake of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion companies of trustworthy Highlanders were raised from loyal clans, Campbells, Grants, Frasers, Munros"

In 1725, General George Wade, the commander of British forces in North Britain authorised the formation of six Independent Companies of troops to police the Highlanders. The companies were known locally as the 'Black Watch', in 1739 they were consolidated to form the 43rd (later 42nd) Regiment at which time this tartan is thought to have been designed.

Black Watch Wool Tartan

Woven in a simple colour palette of Dark Green, Dark Blue and Black, the pattern of Black Watch Tartan achieves depth and interest due to the variation of stripe width and order within the classic sett.

Black Watch Tartan is a favourite to be worn at formal occasions, being versatile, subtly decorative and supremely smart.
