A hazy symphony of purple and green, the Isle of Skye tartan sailed to victory when the island hosted a competition to design an official tartan.
The endearing Isle of Skye tartan has an interesting origin, and one that might surprise you.
Designed by weaver Angus MacLeod from neighbouring Lewis, this picturesque tartan was selected by Rosemary Nicolson Samios as the winning design of an international competition in 1992. Now resident on the Isle of Skye, Mrs Nicolson Samios is an Australian of Skye descent.
Protected by restrictions recorded with the Scottish Register of Tartans, the popular Isle of Skye tartan is commercially woven by Lochcarron of Scotland who in 1993 produced the first traditional kilt weight cloth at their original North Strome location, within view of the Cuillin Mountains. The tones of the tartan perfectly reflect the unmistakable landscape and environment of the island, often referred to as the 'Misty Isle'. Heathery purples, mossy greens combine with bracken brown and a flash of grey - the Isle of Skye brought to life in tartan.
