The Great Kilt
The Great Kilt
Optional Extras
The Feileadh Mor, the belted plaid, or as it has become commonly known today, The Great Kilt, is a modern reproduction of the Highlanders' historic belted plaid.
Consisting of a simple length of woven woollen cloth ( between 4 - 6 yards), traditionally hand pleated without stitching, then belted, pinned or tied to form practical vestures. Ingenious methods of utilising the generous cloth evolved, allowing the savvy Highlander to arrange many functional garments from this versatile staple of Highland garb.
Pleating the cloth minimised volume while creating warmth and flexibility. Draping hooded or shawled sections offered camouflage or protection. Folding in pockets allowed supplies and tools to be easily carried, offering a method of concealment if needed. And of course, comfort and rest could be found at the end of the Highlander's long day, when wholly wrapped in the full yardage.
This ancient daily dress of the ordinary Highland Scot has become an iconic symbol of traditional identity. Commonly associated with a period of tumultuous upheaval for indigenous communities, The Great Kilt should be worn today with reticence in recognition of cultural heritage, integrity and stoic resistance.
